the name game

It’s boring at home with no one to play with. Then comes a tap at the window!

It’s a sad fact that children now spend more time indoors than ever. There are too few safe out-of-doors places where they can play, traffic rules the streets and ‘stranger danger’ is on every parent’s mind. The lockdowns during the height of the Covid pandemic made matters worse, but it’s an ongoing problem.

But a child’s imagination is a wonderful thing, and even stuck at home alone, a child can create a world of friendships in her mind. The little girl in The Name Game watches out from her upstairs city flat for any living creature she can see - a magpie, a butterfly, a cat and even a tree. She gives them names, and they become her friends.

The Name Game is beautifully illustrated by Olivia Holden.
